The Biomarker Edge is Alamar Biosciences’ thought leadership series featuring conversations and content from leading scientists, clinicians, and translational researchers at the forefront of fluid biomarker discovery. Through expert interviews and in-depth blogs, the series explores how cutting-edge technologies like NULISA™ are transforming research and diagnostics across a wide range of diseases.
From neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, to oncology, inflammation, and autoimmune disorders, The Biomarker Edge brings clarity to the challenges—and opportunities—of measuring ultra-low abundance proteins from plasma and other biofluids.
In-depth discussions with scientific and clinical experts driving innovation in fluid biomarker discovery.
In this third episode of The Biomarker Edge, Dr. Cheryl Wellington from the University of British Columbia, discusses her work advancing fluid biomarkers in Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury, and stroke. She shares insights on launching a new biomarker core facility, building collaborations with over 120 clinical partners, and expanding biomarker applications from pediatric to geriatric care. Dr. Wellington highlights how ultra-sensitive, multiplexed technologies like ARGO™ and NULISA™ are enabling low-volume specimen analysis, broad biomarker panels, and translational research that bridges clinical and pre-clinical models.
In this second episode of The Biomarker Edge, Dr. Ashton, A global leader in Alzheimer’s and neurodegeneration research, shares his latest work on blood-based biomarkers including p-tau217, NfL, GFAP, and other emerging candidates. He discusses the importance of brain-specific versus peripheral signals, the challenges of clinical translation, and how ultra-sensitive, multiplexed technologies like NULISA™ are accelerating progress toward earlier and more accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
In this premiere episode of The Biomarker Edge, world-renowned neurologist and biomarker expert Dr. Henrik Zetterberg discusses the urgent need for ultra-sensitive, multiplexed fluid biomarker assays to advance neurodegenerative disease research. Dr. Zetterberg shares insights on the future of blood-based biomarker detection for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other CNS disorders—and how new technologies like NULISA™ are redefining what’s possible in early detection and disease monitoring.
Unpacking key challenges in fluid biomarker discovery and how NULISA is solving them

CSO
Dr. Willams serves as the company’s Chief Scientific Officer. He was previously Chief Medical Officer at Standard Biotools and at SomaLogic where he pioneered the discipline for discovery and validation of predictive, diagnostic and prognostic models using machine-learning applied to large-plex proteomics. 20 such tests were used for drug characterization, safety and efficacy when incorporated in clinical drug trials at Pharma/Biotech and 17 different multivariate tests were validated and translated into regulated healthcare uses. Prior to SomaLogic, Dr. Williams was at Pfizer in the UK and the USA as a clinical triallist in Translational Medicine, and subsequently as VP, Global Clinical Technology. He sat on the National Advisory Council for the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, the Executive Committee for the FNIH Biomarkers Consortium, and worked with FDA and PhRMA on developing evidentiary standards for biomarker qualification. Dr. William’s medical training was in London, at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, followed by a PhD in medicine/physiology at the same institution and training in Radiology at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Steve is co-inventor on 26 proteomics patents and author/coauthor on multiple foundational proteomics manuscripts.
